The Full Two-Day Programme

Maximum of 10 participants.

The full two-day programme has been designed to provide the basis of a really well-informed transition towards retirement (or semi-retirement) for professionals in their 50s & 60s.

We restrict each retreat to just ten participants. We do this because this allows us to create an atmosphere of a guided conversation between domain experts & well-informed participants. We can cover the core common ground in the small group & supplement this with 1:1 time, you and the specialists.

We build in flexibility so that you can choose how you want to spend some of the time. We have a full programme but if you want to go off and enjoy a swim or a walk for half an hour that’s absolutely fine.

NB: this is an example programme. We may, of course, need to adjust the order & content on particular retreats due to our specialists’ availability or circumstances that arise & are outside our control.

Day One

Psychological adjustment: a one-hour session led by Linda Blair, looking at the best ways to transition from full-time work to retirement or semi-retirement. Linda will, amongst other things look at “the six-week dip”, (re)creating structure whilst allowing spontaneity & developing healthy relationships with friends & family. This session establishes the ground for some 1:1 time with Linda later in the day (if you would like that).

Diet in retirement: a one-hour session led by renowned dietician Renee McGregor. Nutrition plays a significant role in immune, bone, hormonal & physical health. Renee will provide very practical suggestions to optimise your nutritional practices. This session establishes the ground for some 1:1 time with Renee later in the day (if you would like that).

During the afternoon there will be opportunities for you to spend time 1:1 with both Linda Blair & Renee McGregor talking in private about issues that you want to explore with them, but which are more suited to a private conversation. This is in parallel with a session of yoga running all afternoon & the opportunity to take a swim in the spa. So you can dip in & out of the yoga session as you wish & have some time to talk to our yoga instructor.

In the early evening, via video link from the USA we are joined by Professor Leslie Martin, one of the co-authors of “The Longevity Project”. The project followed 1,500 bright children from age 10 to death & has revealed some startling insights as to who lives longest & why. Debunk some conventional wisdom. This leads into dinner if you wish. Please note that dinner is not included in the course fee but many participants like the opportunity to continue the conversation over dinner in the hotel.

Day Two

Physical health: Dr Trisha MacNair leads a one hour session looking at how the body changes with age & what you can do to optimise your health. Her session includes a look at the cardiovascular system, locomotor system, central nervous system, sleep, endocrine system, urinary system, general niggles & easy hacks for a longer, healthier life.

Retirement finance: a structured conversation, led by our expert who will take a look at accessing pension funds & the tax implications, investment strategy if you remain invested during retirement, basic estate planning & thinking about the longer term & the possible need for care funding.

All afternoon, Rebecca Malcolm will lead a session that you can dip in & out of in between one to one meetings with the morning session leaders. Rebecca will guide you through exercises, including if you’d like her to, pilates, which will help greatly in keeping fit during these really important years. Rebecca will cover mobility, motivation, functional fitness (keeping fit enough to do the other things that you enjoy in life), resistance training & cardiovascular fitness. The group is small enough that there should be plenty of time to discuss your personal situation with Rebecca & get her advice, whether you are currently a fitness fanatic or the reverse!

During the afternoon there will be opportunities for you to spend time 1:1 with both Dr Trisha MacNair & our retirement finance specialist talking in private about issues that you want to explore with them, but which are more suited to a private conversation.
